A few things about flying – KOMMENTTI: Hei! Nyt kun finnairilla on haku päällä, niin olisi kiva kuulla sinun alkuvaiheistasi lentouralla. Millainen hakuprosessi / kurssi oli, entä ensimmäiset lennot ym. Muutitko Oulusta tämän työn perässä helsinkiin? Olisiko ollut mahdollista lentää oulusta käsin? Tuntuuko tässä vaiheessa että viihtyisit alalla pitkäänkin?
VASTAUS: Muutin aikanaan Oulusta Helsinkiin kurssia varten. Oulustakin jotkut kollegat lentää eli se on ihan mahdollista, mutta aikaavievää ja aika kallistakin. Kentän lähellä pitää kuitenkin olla joku päivystyskämppä, josta pääsee tarvittaessa äkkiä töihin päivystysten aikana. Samoin Oulun lennot on usein aika täysiä, joten aina ei välttämättä mahdu kyytiin. Itse en lähtisi Oulusta asti lentämään!
Kurssi oli intensiivinen ja aika rankka. Päivät oli pitkiä, kokeita oli usein ja niistä on pakko päästä läpi. Joka päivä tuli paljon uutta asiaa. Meillä oli kuitenkin niin kiva porukka, että kurssilla oli tosi kivaa ja aina oli kiva mennä kurssille. Mulle oli myös kivaa vaihtelua kuuden yliopistovuoden jälkeen opiskella jotain käytännönläheistä ja konkreettista asiaa.
Meillä oli kurssin loppupuolella pätkä, jolloin käytiin lentämässä muutama lento. Oltiin siis lennolla ihan virkapuku päällä ja tehtiin töitä, mutta oltiin varsinaisen miehistön lisäksi extra-jäsenenä, eikä siis kuuluttu minimimiehistöön. Oli tosi hyvä, että päästiin lentään kurssin aikana niin sai vähän konkreettista kokemusta. Sitten oli myös helpompi aloittaa oikeat työt kun oli edes jotain kokemusta takana.
Mun mielestä lentoemännän työ on aika helppoa, eikä työasioita todellakaan tarvi miettiä työajan ulkopuolella, mikä on kiva juttu. Toki jokainen asiakaspalvelutyössä ollut tietää, millaista asiakkaiden kanssa työskentely parhaimmillaan ja pahimmillaan on. Tykkään kyllä lentää, mutta en usko loppuelämääni lentäväni. Seuraavaksi haluaisin tehdä jotain omaan koulutukseen liittyvää hommaa. Saapa nähdä mitä seuraavaksi keksin!
A few things about flying – QUESTION: Hi! Now that Finnair is recruiting, it would be nice to hear about the beginning of your flying career. How was the recruiting process/ the course, first flights etc. Did you move from Oulu to Helsinki for this work? Would it be possible to fly from Oulu? Do you feel like you could keep flying for a longer time?
ANSWER: I moved from Oulu to Helsinki for the course. Some of my colleagues do fly from Oulu, but it is quite expensive and takes a lot of time. You would also need to have a second apartment somewhere near the airport for the standbys. Also the Oulu flights are often quite full, so you might not always get in! I personally would not want to fly from Oulu.
The course was pretty intensive and rough. The days were long, there were a lot of exams and they must be passed. A lot of new stuff had to be learned every day. However, we had such a great group on our course, so it was always nice to come to the course and every day was nice with the group. Also it was a nice change for me after six years in the university to study something more practical and concrete.
After the halfway of the course we had a few practice flights. We were wearing the uniform and doing the normal duties on the flights, but we were extra members of the crew, not part of the minimum crew. It was very useful to get those flights, so we gained some real experience before starting to work for real.
In my opinion, the work of a flight attendant is pretty easy and you really don’t need to worry about work stuff outside of your working hours and that is very nice. Although everyone who has been in a customer service job knows what that work can be on its best and its worst moments. I like to fly, but I don’t think I will be doing it for the rest of my life. Next I would like to do something more related to my education. Let’s see what I come up with next!

Hasta pronto Madrid
Hasta pronto Madrid – Viimeinen Madrid-postaus tältä erää. Viimeisen päivän ohjelmassa oli vain kotimatkalle lähtö. Hostellin respan ikkunoista oli aivan älyttömän kauniit näkymät auringonnousuun, vaikka kuvasta ei välitykään koko kauneus. Mulla oli siis aika aikainen lähtö aamulla ja ajattelin käydä aamukahvilla siinä Gran Víalla jossain kahvilassa ennen ku hyppään metroon. Siinä oli parikin paikkaa, mitkä piti aueta seitsemältä. Menin kykkiin siihen kulmille laukkuineni ootteleen, että ovet aukenee. No, eihän ne auenneet! Vartin yli asti odottelin ja sitten mun piti jo lähtä, ettei tuu kiire. Ei oo Espanjassa niin justiin noiden kellonaikojen kanssa, vaikka isojen kansainvälisten ketjujen kahviloita oli molemmat. No, kentältä sitten sain pakollisen kahvini!
Kentällä virkailija sanoi, että kone on ihan täynnä viimeistä paikkaa myöten, mutta pääsin kuitenkin kyytiin. Vaikka eipä se kyllä mikään katastrofi olis ollu, vaikka olisin joutunu jäämään vielä yhdeksi yöksi Madridiin. Kotona Helsingissä lumisade toivotti mut tervetulleeksi ja sama jatkui vielä muutaman päivän sen jälkeen. Siinä lumisadetta ihmetellessä alettiin Awsin kans miettiin, että miksi ei muutettas Madridiin. Ei tarttis katella lumisadetta toukokuussa. Niin, miksi ei? Aikamoisesti molemmat innostuttiin ja alettiinkin samantien suunnitteleen. Ainakin nyt näyttää siltä, että kunhan saadaan asiat järjestykseen aletaan tosissaan puuhaamaan muuttoa Madridiin. Kaikenlaista sitä tuleekin keksittyä!

Hasta pronto Madrid – The last Madrid-post for a moment. On the last day my only activity was to start my journey back home. The hostel windows had an amazing view to the sunrise, although the pictures don’t show the whole beauty. I had a quite early morning and I had planned to go to some coffee place by Gran Vía to have coffee before taking the metro to the airport. I had checked that there were a couple of places nearby that were supposed to open at 7am. I went there with my suitcase and everything to wait for the doors to open. Well, they didn’t open! I waited until 7:15 and then I had to leave so I wouldn’t be in a hurry. I suppose it’s not so precise with the schedules in Spain, even though both of those places belong to big international chains. Well, I got my obligatory coffee from the airport!
At the airport the clerk said that the flight is fully booked till the last seat, but I got in anyway. It would not have been a disaster even if I had to stay in Madrid for another day anyway. Home in Helsinki I was welcomed by the snow and the snowing continued for a few days after that too. Shocked by the snowing me and Aws started to think, why don’t we move to Madrid. Then we wouldn’t need to deal with snow in May. Yes, why not? We both got quite exited and we started planning right away. Now it seems that once we get all things sorted out, we will seriously start organizing the moving. Heheh, what next?

Madrid day 3
Madrid-juttua taas! Kolmannen päivän aamuna lähdin katteleen aamupalapaikkaa, kun hostellilla ei ollut aamupalaa. Googlettelin pari paikkaa siitä aika läheltä, mutta mun yllätyksekseni moni paikka aukas vasta kymmeneltä! Se on mun mielestä aamupalapaikaksi aika myöhään. Tuokin paikka, mihin lopulta menin aukas virallisesti vasta kymmeneltä, mutta ovet oli auki jo ennen sitä, niin minähän marssin sisään. Harvoin on yhtä espanjalainen olo kuin silloin, kun menee ihan sellaseen perinteiseen espanjalaiseen baariin aamukahville. Siinä kun hörppii baaritiskillä kahviaan bisnesmiesten ja duunareitten kanssa sulassa sovussa, voi aistia palan aitoa espanjaa. Tuo kuvissa oleva kahvila ei kuitenkaan ollut edellä mainitunlainen perinteinen paikka, vaikka kiva kahvila olikin.
Aamupalan jälkeen lähdin taas Retiroon, ylläri. Menin ihan urheilukamppeissa tarkoituksena juosta ja tehä kuntopiiriä, mutta loppujen lopuksi vaan käveleskelin siellä ristiin rastiin ja otin kuvia. Samalla päätin, että mikäli ikinä enää asun Madridissa, haluan asua ihan Retiron vieressä. Okei, oli mun edellinenkin kämppä Retiron vieressä (700 m päässä), mutta olis niin ihana asua siinä ihan vieressä! Reippailun jälkeen menin ottaan kulutetut kalorit – ja vähän enemmänkin – takaisin San Ginesin churroilla! Parhaat churrot, piste. Tuo San Ginesin churropaikka ydinkeskustassa on auki suunnilleen vuorokauden ympäri joka päivä. Kerran vaihtariaikana jonakin tiistaiyönä päätin, että nyt meen hakeen churrot, kun tekee mieli. Kello oli jotain kaksi yöllä (miksi olin kotona hereillä siihen aikaan – en tiedä) ja ajattelin, että siellä paikassa ei oo varmaan paljon porukkaa. Ja mitä vielä! Koko kahvila oli täynnä eläkeläisiä! Eipä tapahdu Suomessa tuommoista.
Illalla käytiin Saran töiden jälkeen tapaksilla ja oluella Malasañan alueella ja sen jälkeen palasinkin hostellille pakkaileen kamppeita ja valmistautuun kotiinpaluuseen. Kävin ostaan lähikaupasta vähän evästä aamuksi ja lennolle ja samalla oli pakko käydä vielä pikku mutka käveleskeleen siinä keskustassa. Kuten oon maininnut ennenkin, yöllinen Madrid <3
Madrid-stuff again! In the morning of the third day I went out to look for a breakfast place, because there was no breakfast at the hostel. I googled a couple of places close by, but to my surprise these place opened at 10am. I think it is quite late for a breakfast place. Also this place where I went to officially opened at ten, but the doors were open before ten so I just went in.
There are not many situations when I could feel more spanish than when having a morning coffee in a traditional Spanish bar. When drinking a coffee by the bar, a business man on the other side and a construction worker on the other, also having their coffees, you can really feel a piece of traditional Spain. That place I went to wasn’t really that kind of traditional bar, but it was a nice coffee place anyway.
After the breakfast I went to Retiro again, surprise. I was wearing sport clothes and my intention was to run and do some exercises there, but I ended up just walking around and taking pictures. I also decided that if I ever move to Madrid again, I want to live right by Retiro. Okey, my last apartment was also close to Retiro (700 m away), but it would be so lovely to live even closer. After Retiro I went to refuel the burned calories – and some more – with churros at San Gines. The best churros.
The San Gines churro place is open around the clock I think, every day of the year. During my exchange study times, one Tuesday night I decided to go get churros, because I started craving for them. It was something around 2 am (why I was awake at home at that time – I don’t know) and I thought the place must be quite empty. How wrong was I! The place was full of retired elderly people! That doesn’t happen in Finland, for sure.
At night after Sara’s work we went to have tapas and beers in Malasaña area and after that I had to return to the hostel to pack my stuff and prepare for the return home. I went to a market to buy some food for the morning and for the flight and I couldn’t help but walk some more in the center. Like I mentioned before, the Madrid nights <3
