Cold but beautiful. Hellou! Dubai-teemalla jatkuu! Toisena pĂ€ivĂ€nĂ€ suuntasin taas aamupalan jĂ€lkeen rannalle. TĂ€llĂ€ kertaa menin taksilla 😀 Taksikuski sattui olemaan oikein mukava pakistanilainen nuori mies ja matkalla rannalle ehdittiin puhua vaikka mistĂ€! Puhuttiin mm. työelĂ€mĂ€stĂ€ Dubaissa ja muualla ja hĂ€n kertoili nĂ€kemyksiÀÀn rikkaiden paikallisten elĂ€mĂ€ntyylistĂ€. Tyyppi kertoili myös alueista, joissa paikalliset rikkaat sheikit asuu ja kyllĂ€pĂ€ olis kiva pÀÀstĂ€ joskus nĂ€kemÀÀn millaista se elĂ€mĂ€ on!

Hello! I’ll continue with Dubai stuff! On the second day after the breakfast I went to the beach again. This time by taxi 😀 The taxi driver happened to be a very nice young Pakistani man and on the way to the beach we had time to speak about many things! We spoke about work life in Dubai and in other countries and he told me about the lifestyle of the local rich sheiks. He told me about the neighborhoods where those people live and some day I would really like to see how that kind of life is!

Rannalla sai taas olla aika rauhassa. Porukkaa oli paljon siinĂ€ lĂ€hellĂ€ Burj al Arabia, mihin taksikuski mut jĂ€tti, mutta kĂ€velin siitĂ€ aika pitkĂ€sti pohjoiseen pĂ€in ja mitĂ€ kauemmaksi kĂ€velin, sitĂ€ vĂ€hemmĂ€n siellĂ€ oli muita ihmisiĂ€. Rannalla tuuli edelleen aika kovaa, joten kovin lĂ€mmin ei ollu. Pari tuntia kĂ€rvistelin, kunnes totesin, ettĂ€ nyt riittÀÀ. SiitĂ€ hotellille suihkuun ja sitten Dubai Mallille. Joku ehkĂ€ miettii, miksi en tehnyt pitkĂ€llĂ€ layoverilla mitÀÀn erikoista vaikka aikaa olisi ollut. Mulla on oikeastaan kaks syytĂ€.

It was very quiet at the beach again. There were a lot of people there near the Burj al Arab where the taxi driver left me, but I walked north along the beach and the longer I walked, less people there were. It was pretty windy again at the beach, so it wasn’t too warm. I struggled for about two hours and then I decided it was enough. Then back to the hotel, shower and then to Dubai Mall. Someone might think why didn’t I do anything special during this trip when I would have had time. There are two reasons. First, I didn’t want to spend much money on this trip and second, my goal on this trip was to relax and sleep well. I did manage to relax, but I didn’t manage to sleep well. I’ve had sleeping problems recently and they continued on this trip too…

Tuo kirja (Daniel Kahneman: Thinking, fast and slow) on muuten ÀlyttömÀn mielenkiintoinen! Negatiivisista ajatusmalleista on kuitenkin mahdollista oppia pois!

That book (Daniel Kahneman: Thinking, fast and slow), by the way, is very interesting! I bought it already a while ago, on some earlier Dubai trip, but I only read a few pages then. The language in the book is not the most simple, so it requires a little more focusing than some other book. No point trying to read this book when you are tired or in some rush hour metro. Now I have read it a little further and this far it has explained how automatic our minds work, in good and bad sense. Sometimes it is said, that a person is a prisoner of his own mind and beliefs and that might just be true. It is possible though to learn to avoid negative paradigms!

In the book they spoke about a study, where they put half of a group to force a smile while watching a video and the other half had to frown while watching. After the video they asked the group to answer some questions. Those who had smiled, even a forced smile, answered more positively than the other group. In another study they made half of the group to watch a video related to old people and the other half watched some other video. After that the people had to walk through a hallway to another room. Those who had watched the video of the old people walked slower, no exeptions. There are so many small (or big) cues around us that affect our behaviour and we don’t even notice them!

Poika jutteli niitĂ€ nĂ€itĂ€ ja kerroin tulleeni just salilta. Siihen poika sitten iloisesti vastasi, ettĂ€ jos tulin just salita, niin miksi syön sitten nachoja. Hukkaan menee treeni. Taitaa heidĂ€n kulttuuriin kuulua tietynlainen suorasukaisuus, huomasin saman kun juttelin niiden parin pakistanilaisen taksikuskin kanssa aikasemmin. Tosi mukavia ovat, mutta saattavat yks kaks yllĂ€ttĂ€en kysyĂ€ jotain, mitĂ€ ainakin suomalainen pitÀÀ liian henkilökohtaisena kysymyksenĂ€. No, eipĂ€ se mua haitannut!

Well, I got exited about the book… 😀 I had to mention it anyway, it is so interesting. On the last day I went to the hotel pool area, to read my book. We had a super early morning the next day, so my goal for that day was to go to bed as early and as tired as possible. After some pooltime I went to the hotel gym and I wanted to do a killer workout. I ran on the treadmill like a crazy person and after that I did some strenght training. After the gym I ordered some food from the room service. The man who delivered the food was a very nice young, probably Pakistani, man again. He chatted with me while setting the table and I mentioned that I just came from the gym. To that the man happily responded that why would I eat nachos then, it will ruin the workout. I think it is a cultural thing to be so straightforward, I noticed the same with the two taxi drivers earlier. They are very nice and then all of a sudden they might ask something that at least a Finnish person consideres very peronal question. Well, I didn’t mind!

Aika pirtsakka olo oli paluulennolla 😀 Nyt ollaan just Tyynen kans junassa matkalla Helsinkiin. Kivaa viikon alkua! 🙂

I tried to eat my way to a food coma and after that I took a bath and then to bed. During the whole day I tried my best to prepare myself for a good sleep, but it didn’t happen. I slept maybe 20 minutes before my alarm rang at 02:45 am, 00:45 am Finnish time. Quite an energetic feeling on the return flight 😀 Now me and Tyyne are in the train on our way to Helsinki. Have a great week! 🙂

annimarian hello DubaiHello Dubai! TÀÀllĂ€ taas, pitkĂ€stĂ€ aikaa 🙂 Olin taas Dubaissa, tĂ€llĂ€ kertaa oli vĂ€hĂ€n pidempi reissu. LĂ€hdettiin HelsingistĂ€ maanantaina aamulla ja palattiin takaisin perjantaina aamulla. Maanantaina kun saavuttiin perille, niin Dubaissa satoi! Aika harvinaista! Tultiin hotellille siinĂ€ iltasella ja olin jo pÀÀttĂ€nyt, etten lĂ€hde ensimmĂ€isenĂ€ iltana huoneesta mihinkÀÀn. Olin nukkunut edellisenĂ€ yönĂ€ ehkĂ€ 20 minuuttia, joten olin pÀÀttĂ€nyt mennĂ€ tosi aikaisin nukkumaan. Lennon jĂ€lkeen on kyllĂ€ parasta, kun pÀÀsee suihkun jĂ€lkeen hotellin lakanoihin nukkuun. Ahhh!

Hello Dubai! I’m still here, though it’s been a while 🙂 My last trip was to Dubai and this time it was a little bit longer trip than usual. We left from Helsinki on Monday morning and returned on Friday morning. When we arrived there on Monday, it was raining! Quite unusual! When we arrived to the hotel in the evening, I had already decided not to move anywhere from the room. I had slept maybe 20 minutes on the previous night, so I wanted to go to bed super early. Nothing better after a flight than taking a shower and hopping in to the hotel bed. Ahhh!

The next morning I went to the breakfast quite close to the closing time. There was a line to the restaurant, so the staff suggested that I go to another restaurant in the hotel for the breakfast. I did, and that was a good decision since the other place was this nice and quiet coffee place with ĂĄ la carte breakfast. After the breakfast I went to the beach. The hotel’s pool area is nice too, but it’s not always sunny there, because the sun goes behind the hotel towers at some point. There is this canal behind the hotel that leads to the beach and there is a nice sidewalk on both sides of the canal. I decided to combine the beach and a little exercise and walk there. First I asked the people in the reception if they had bikes to borrow. They looked at me in a weird way and said no. I told them that in that case I will walk to the beach. Then they looked at me like I had lost my mind 😀

In Dubai nobody walks nowhere. Often it is not even possible, because there are no sidewalks. I had imagined that I could walk by the canal all the way to the beach, but to my surprise the sidewalk was not finished there near the beach so I had to take a little detour, but finally I managed to get to the beach. It took me more than an hour though, but the weather wasn’t hot. Actually it was pretty cold at the beach and there was nobody else than me in that part of the beach. I was going to take a taxi back to the hotel, but since there were no taxis around, I started walking towards the hotel. After all, I ended up walking the whole way 😀

Illalla menin Dubai Mallille, kuinkas muutenkaan.

In the evening I went to the Dubai Mall. In other destinations I would go to the center or somewhere to walk around, but in Dubai I go to a mall. It’s not that I specifically want to go there, but there are not much options if I want to walk around. I bought one dress that I tried on, but didn’t buy in my last trip. Now it was on sale! I also bought a book, like I do on almost every trip. That was all the shopping I did on this trip!

Kivaa sunnuntaita!

Now I’m visiting my parents and tomorrow I’ll return to Helsinki with Tyyne. Maybe I’ll work on another Dubai post in the train tomorrow. Have a nice Sunday!

Saturday – Heippa! KyllĂ€pĂ€s on taas aika vilahtanut Ă€kkiĂ€!

Ihanaa illanjatkoa! 🙂

Saturday – Hello! How did the time go past so fast again… Especially this month it really feels like the time goes so fast, because every time I leave for work, it takes two days. Yesterday I had an evening standby and I was pretty sure that they wouldn’t call me anymore since there were no flights left anymore where they could call me to. Well, everything is possible when it comes to aviation and they did call me in the evening! The whole crew for that flight came from a standby since the original crew was delayed with another flight.

Today I have a day off, tomorrow as well. It is so nice to have time off on a weekend! The pictures are from Oulu where I was a few days ago. I went for a long lunch date with a friend and later I had coffee with my grandmother. They borrow bikes from the hotel, so I’m able to go to many places even on a short layover! There I hurried around the city center with my Poni-bike 😀

Have a lovely evening! 🙂

annimarianHeippa!

Hello! Some more Dubai stuff now! On Sunday, on our last day, after the breakfast we both went to the pool area for a moment. Aws is not so keen to be in the sun, but he came there to keep me company. We swam (or floated around ) for a moment and then we went back to the room to get ready for other activities of the day. We decided to go check out the Emirates Mall, because I hadn’t seen it either. We went with the metro, which was a good thing, because now I know how it is and I can go alone the next time.

When we went to the metro, the train just arrived to the station and we ran in to catch it. We just jumped to the first car until we noticed it was some kind of Gold Class-car and there was even this man in a suit to serve the passengers. We were told to move away so we went to the next car. There a woman started to speak to me and I didn’t understand what she was saying. After a moment I realized she was saying that Aws shouldn’t be there because that car is only for women and children. Again we moved and the rest of the way we were fine 😀

Emirates Mallilla on mm. tuo ekassa kuvassa nĂ€kyvĂ€ “lumimaailma”, jossa on pieni laskettelurinne ja muuta lumijuttua. Kaikesta ne ihmiset maksaa! Tuolta lĂ€hdettiin sitten taas metrolla Deiran alueelle, missĂ€ on yks irakilainen ravintola mihin haluttiin mennĂ€.

In the Emirates Mall we saw this “snow world” that has a small hill for downhill skiing and other snow stuff. I can’t believe people pay to get there! From the mall we left again with the metro to go to Deira neighbourhood to visit this one Iraqian restaurant. It was interesting to see that area too, because it was very different compared to Marina or Business Bay, for example. No tall skycrapers there, just normal buildings and we didn’t see any other tourists there. The people there seemed to be mostly “locals”, meaning the immigrant workers from other countries as well as some real locals. Very different atmosphere in that neighbourhood.

We were walking towards the restaurant when Aws suddenly said “Oh no, there is a mosque right there and we have to go past it. A little dangerous.” I was surprised and asked why, so he told me that even my presence near the mosque might be too much for some fanatic. I think it’s needless to say that I was wearing a knee-covering dress with short sleeves. We moved to the other side of the street and walked past it quickly.

The restaurant was Iraqian and Aws had visited the same chain’s restaurant in Baghdad. The food was super good! It’s the iraqian way to bring stuff to the table that we didn’t order and it is included in the price. Everything was fresh, good quality and soooo delicious! The interior of the restaurant was also very beautiful, but apparently I only took photos of the lamps. After the dinner we walked through a mall next to the restaurant to go tho this other metro stop. On the doors of the mall there were big signs that modest clothing is required and no signs of affection may be shown (including holding hands). I suggested that we walk around a little to look around, but Aws said it was not a good idea. The place was full of locals that apparently were not happy to see me/us there, so we decided to just walk straight through the place.

Even though Dubai is a cool destination for a layover, it still is quite weird place after all. Everything is shiny, fancy and modern, but once you step outside the touristic places, it’s all different. Most of the locals still represent the conservative and rigid culture, although the tourists might not notice it. One visible sign of that is the white and black gowns the locals wear. In the more modern and open Arabic countries, like Iraq, almost no one wears those. As a city Dubai is still so young that the locals are not on the same level as the appearance of the city let’s one assume.

Kivaa illan jatkoa! 🙂

I could write so much more of the cultural differences, but I think I will sop this here! I wrote quite a lot already 😀 Tomorrow I’ll fly to Oulu for an over-night trip. Have a nice evening! 🙂
